About Us

At Peninsula Vet we appreciate the special bond that exists between people and their animals, and we are committed to playing a key role in ensuring that your pet lives a long, happy, and healthy life.

Established in the late 1940s, we have grown into a reputable veterinary hospital that provides a wide range of services to pet owners in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs.

We are renowned for providing compassionate care to pets and their parents and therefore it was a natural fit when we joined the TAH Group in 2019, our 55th year of existence.

History

The practice was started by Dr Jim Brownlie in 1964. His classmate from Glasgow University, Dr Dick Hyam, joined him and the partnership expanded to include Fish Hoek Veterinary Clinic, which was run by Drs Clive Mc Donald and Tim Pritchett. The new facility offered caring veterinary service to clients from all over the Peninsula.

In 1979 the practice moved from Plumstead to the cottage in Diep River, and in 1980 we moved into our purpose-built hospital. Drs Brownlie and Hyam retired in 1986, and Dr Robert Campbell joined the practice in 1984, followed by Dr Mark Barron in 1986.

The Peninsula Vet/Fish Hoek Vet partnership split in 1997, with Drs Campbell and Barron staying on at Diep River. Dr Chris Clegg joined the partnership in 2010 and Dr Barron retired when TAH bought the practice in 2019.

Due to the growth at the practice and our dedication to delivering quality service, we appointed Dr Melissa Oettlé in 2020 and Dr Jaid Limbert in 2021, leaving the practice in the extremely capable veterinary hands of Drs Clegg, Campbell, Oettlé and Limbert.

We are continuously looking at ways in which we can enhance the patient and customer experience and that includes the facilities in which we operate. In 2003 the waiting room was extended to allow more retail space and in 2013 we extended into the building to allow space for the isolation ward, and the rehab unit. The hospital underwent a major facelift in 2021, providing more space, as well as a dedicated cat ward. This will enable us to deliver even better service to our patients and clients, which is our greatest commitment.
